In 2013, Like other children across the country, eight-year-old Mia LeRoux was enjoying the Rainbow Loom craze – making multi-colored bracelets out of rubber bands. But it’s not making the colorful jewelry that pleased her most; it is giving them away.

 

During a visit to her grandfather’s nursing home, he remarked on the bracelets Mia was wearing. Impulsively, Mia took them off, gave two to her grandfather and then gave the rest to other residents. The reception to her generosity was overwhelming and it wasn’t lost on her.

 

Mia, a Feinstein Junior Scholar who was inspired by Alan Shawn Feinstein’s philanthropy, decided she wanted kids just like her to spread cheer in their communities across the country.

 

So she told her parents that she wanted to make more bracelets and cards, but not for herself. “I don’t really need to wear a lot of them, I would rather make them for other kids or give other kids stuff to make them,” said Mia. The Nayatt School in Barrington, RI was the first of several schools working with Looms for Love to collect bracelets, which were donated at area nursing homes and local hospitals.

 

Looms for Love volunteers will make or collect bracelets, crafts and handwritten notes. The organization also raises funds to purchase kits and craft supplies for children in hospitals.

 

In keeping with Mia’s goal of uniting all children to do good works, she has issued a call to action for children all over the country to be part of the project. With your help, she just may achieve her goal.
